In the Interim – We’re so glad you’re here!

by Lauren Dockery, Director of Children and Youth Ministries

Dear Friends,

There’s a new sign going up at the edge of our playground. Maybe you’ve seen it in progress. It’s hand-painted by the kids of our community, with bright colors and a simple message: “We’re so glad you’re here! — from St. Paul’s Kids.”

It’s a message for our neighbors, for children passing by, for families who stop to play, but it’s also a message for all of us this fall. As we start a new program year with a new rector, whether you’re new to St. Paul’s or returning after a summer away, we want you to know: we’re so glad you’re here!

The truth is, it’s not always easy to step into something new. And sometimes, it’s not even easy to return to a place you love. Sometimes, church can feel like some expectations and qualifications must be met before you’re allowed to belong. Though it sounds silly, many of us have had that fear, and it simply isn’t true. Belonging isn’t about having the perfect kids, knowing everyone’s name, or the names for every part of the liturgy. It’s also not about showing up at the “right time” or “doing church” a certain way. Belonging is simpler and deeper than that. Belonging starts when we let ourselves be seen. And sometimes all it takes to begin again is a sign that says: This place is for you, and we’re so glad you’re here!

That’s what this program year is about. At every age and stage, from toddlers to teens to longtime parishioners to our many newcomers, we’re making space for people to explore what it means to belong. To belong to God. To one another. To the body of Christ in this place.

We hope you’ll join us. We’re so glad you’re here.

With warmth and welcome,

Lauren Dockery
Director of Children & Youth Ministry
